Yogurt is an important part of our daily nutrition. Being healthy, nutritious and tasty, it provides for a day full of energy.
Yogurt is made from fresh milk and is a fermented product. It contains live bacteria including Lactobacillus bulgaricus & Streptococcus thermophiles which convert milk to yogurt through a fermentation process. Through this process, milk sugars (lactose) are converted to lactic acid which gives yogurt its characteristic, light sour flavor and smell.
As a fermented product, yogurt is more easily digested than milk and is ideal for those with a lactose intolerance. Yogurt has a rich protein value and is a vital source of calcium for bones and teeth, while it also contains phosphorus, vitamins and minerals. The combination of these nutrients contributes to maintaining good health. It produces natural antibiotics that fight bacteria that cause illness. Also, it restores the balance of the intestinal microflora, thus preventing gastrointestinal problems.
Yogurt can be enjoyed for breakfast with cereal, honey or fruit, as a snack at work with crackers, nuts or fruit and as a complement to any meal. It can also act as the prime ingredient in sweets or other snacks, as a base for ice cream, or can be used in delicious dips and marvellous sauces!
